We live in frightening times, although likely no more so than previously in history. Life on this side of heaven will always have an element of fear, and God knows this. He also makes it clear in His Word that the way to combat fear is to look to him, relying not on our own strength, but in the strength that He gives us for every situation we face.
If you find yourself consumed with anxiety, spend time meditating and reflecting on the following Bible verses to combat fear:
So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand. – Isaiah 41:10, NIV
God acknowledges that we will face fear, but He also commands us to not give in to the feeling of fear. The reason we can do this is because He provides us with the strength and help we need; he takes us by the hand and lifts us. Loma Linda Christian Counseling offers faith-based support to help individuals trust in God’s strength and overcome fear.
Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff; they comfort me. – Psalm 23:4, NIV
Psalm 23 is perhaps one of the most popular Psalms, with Bible verses about fear that have encouraged Christians throughout the centuries. When we are feeling overwhelmed by tough circumstances, we can affirm the words of the Psalmist: God is with us to combat fear, and, just like fearful sheep rely on their shepherd to guide them, we too can lean on our great Shepherd, who knows all our needs.
The Lord is my light and my salvation – whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life – of whom shall I be afraid? – Psalm 27:1, NIV
When we’re in the dark, our deepest desire is for light to expose and dissipate the shadows around us. The Lord as our light is a powerful analogy and reminder that, when we walk apart from Him, we walk in darkness, but when he is close, He gives us the light we need to see our next step.
I sought the Lord, and he answered me; he delivered me from all fears. Those who look to him are radiant; their faces are never covered with shame. – Psalm 34:4-5, NIV
It is an amazing fact that when we call out to God, He answers us in real and tangible ways. The God of the universe who cast the stars into space, cares deeply about our fears. In these Bible verses about fear, we can be reminded of the testimony of those we know who seek God closely in their lives.
Have you seen that they can hold their heads high and get through the day, even in difficult times? This is a wonderful witness to God’s awesome power to take away our fears.
God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way… – Psalm 46:1-2, NIV
When we cling to people and things as our source of refuge and strength, they can be taken away from us, leaving us without a firm foundation. This verse reminds us that, even if the earth gives way, we can still stand firm, knowing that it is in God that our sure hope is found.
God loves us and does not want to see us in fear and anguish. Life is difficult, but we can gain great perspective and strength by remembering that, by sending Jesus to die on the cross, our greatest fears have been put to death, and we can live victorious lives, through Christ’s strength.
